Trinity Loses Two Close Battles

It was a wild evening of conference baseball in a double-header at Judson University (Elgin, Illinois). There was an abundance of hits and runs from both sides and games that came down the final inning. Trinity held leads in both contests, but could not sustain them to lose both contests. The first game was an 8-7 loss and the second was a 16-15 defeat. The Trolls fall to 12-14 overall and 0-4 in the CCAC.

The Trolls started off in the 1st inning of game one with three straight hits, including a two-run homer by Stefano Belmonte, to score three runs. Trinity kept up the offensive attack and by the end of the 4th inning were ahead 7-4.

Trinity’s scoring stopped at that point and Judson took over. The Eagles gained one run in the 5th inning and tied the game in the 6th with two runs.  In the bottom of the 7th with one runner on base Judson hit a double that drove in the game ending run.

The Trolls ended the game with seven hits, of which four were doubles, and Judson had 12 hits. Belmonte led the team with two hits and two RBI.

Trinity was hot at the beginning of the second game as well and had 11 hits in the first 2nd innings to score 10 runs. In those hits were home runs by Belmonte, Zack Jones, Alec Barnhart with two.  By the end of the 3rd inning the Troll held a 10-2 lead.

Things started to get interesting in the 4th inning when Judson stormed back with five runs to close the gap to 10-7. Each team gained a pair in the 5th inning to make it 12-9. The Eagles kept their offensive going and took over the lead in the 6th inning with another four runs.

Trinity scored one in the top of the 7th to briefly tie the game at 13-13, but the Eagles tacked on two in the bottom half to go up by two. The Trolls loaded the bases in the top of the 8th with no outs, but left the runners stranded.  Judson added one run in the bottom to make it a 16-13 game.

In the top of the 9th with two outs and one runner on base Jones smacked one over the fence to close the gap to one run. A hit by Belmonte followed by a walk by Barnhart put two runners on base, but the game ended as the next batter struck out.

Overall Trinity has 20 hits for the game and Judson had 16. Belmonte was 4-for-6 with three RBI. Jones, Barnhart, Chris Riemersma, and Tyler Scrozynski each had three hits. Jones led the team with four RBI.

The team plays next on March 31 in a home game with Calumet College of St. Joseph at 3:30 pm.
