Trolls Win First Four Games in Florida

The Trolls have begun their action in the RussMatt Invitational in their spring break trip to Florida. In the first two days of play the team has posted four victories. They started with a 6-4 and 7-3 wins over Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, Michigan) in a double-header on March 7. In their second double-header they defeated Mount Marty College (Yankton, South Dakota) with final scores of 8-1 and 15-3.

In the opening game with Cornerstone, the Trolls used a five-run 6th inning to pull out at 6-4 win. g. The team trailed 4-1 heading into the fifth, but they rallied behind five hits, of which three were doubles in their at bat, to score six runs to take the lead. Chris Riemersma hit the first double to bring in the first two runs and Zack Jones’ two-bagger brought in two more.

Cornerstone threatened with runners on second and third in the bottom of the 6th, but was held scoreless. The Golden Eagles managed on runner on base in the 7th, but again could not get across the plate.

The Trolls had 12 hits for the game with one-half of them doubles. Cornerstone ended the game with five hits. Jones and Kyle VanKalker each had three hits. Tyler LaFlamme was on the mound for the first six innings and Jones stepped in for the save in the final inning.

In the second game with the Golden Eagles, the Trolls used the long ball to score early and post a 7-3 win. In their first at bat Stefano Belmonte send one over the fence to score three runs. Tyler Sroczynski hit a homer in the 2nd inning to put another two on the board to create a 5-2 lead. The Trolls added another two runs in the 4th inning for a sizable 7-2 gap. Cornerstone gained one in the top of the 6th to bring the final to 7-3.

The Trolls ended with eight hits and Cornerstone had nine. Belmonte had two hits and four RBI and Sroczynski registered two hits with two RBI. Bryan Vanderlee got the win on the mound.

The second day of action brought two more victories as the Trolls took on Mount Marty in a double-header. In the first game Trinity allowed only one run while scoring eight. The Trolls struck early with four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. With one out, the Trolls strung together three singles to make base path busy. Later in the inning Riemersma doubled to help the team tally four runs in the inning.  

Mount Marty scored their only run of the game in the 2nd inning in which they had three of their five hits. After the one run the Trolls stopped Mount Marty and left the bases loaded.

The Trolls added two runs in the 3rd inning on a double by Austin Wood. Wood again helped out the scoring with a RBI single in the 3rd inning to make it 7-1. The Trolls final run came in the 6th inning when Sroczynski singled to get on base, stole both second and third, and scored on an error. Mount Marty loaded the bases in the top of the 7th but were once again left stranded.

For the game the Trolls had 10 hits with Wood and Alec Barnhart each getting two. Tanner Reklaitis pitched the complete game for the win.

The Trolls dominated the first two innings of the second game and jumped to a 15-0 lead. Nine of those runs came in the opening inning on seven hits as the team batter one and one-half times through their order. Lead-off batter Sroczynski had two of those hits, including a three-run home run.  In the 2nd inning the team had six hits, including a double by Belmonte and a two-run single by Barnhart, for six runs.

Mount Marty got on the board in the 3rd inning when an error allowed one run. They rallied in the 7th for another two runs, but it was too little too late to overcome the lead the Trolls had established.

Trinity ended the game with 15 hits and Mount Marty had four. Belmonte recorded three doubles. The Trolls had five different pitchers on the mound with Kyle Doney as the starter.

The team continues their spring break action on March 10 with a double-header with Aquinas College at 9:30 am EST.
