Trolls Stung by Hornets

It was a rough weekend for the Trolls in two double-headers at Harris Stowe State University (St. Louis, Missouri). The team split results on the first day with a 7-6 loss and a 14-9 win. On day two the Trolls fell in both games with a 4-3 loss and a 16-2 defeat. With the 3-1 weekend record, the team is now 7-7 overall.

The Trolls scored six runs in the first game and they all came from the results of home runs. A two-run homer by Stefano Belmonte in the 1st inning put the Trolls on the board. The team went ahead 4-2 after three innings when Alec Barnhart sent one long.

Harris Stowe scored in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 5-4 lead. The Trolls went back on top in the 6th inning on a Blake Kerzich home run that scored two runs. Trinity could not hold their lead as the Hornets came back with two in the bottom half to go ahead 7-6. The Trolls had one last opportunity to score, but did not get across the plate.

In the second game Trinity jumped out to an 8-1 lead by the middle of the 5th inning. Five of those runs were scored in the 5th inning in which Zack Jones and Luke Weston each had two-run homers. The team’s large lead quickly disappeared in the bottom of the 5th when Harris Stowe scored seven runs to make it an 8-8 game.

Each team scored in the 6th to keep the team in a deadlock. The Trolls took control again in the 7th inning with five runs of which two were scored on a double by Jones. The team held Harris Stowe to three up and three down in the bottom.

Overall the Trolls had 14 hits in the game. Tyler Fortier took over the mound in relief and pitched 1.1 innings for the win.

In the first game of the second day of competition the Trolls took the early lead and went ahead 3-0 after the 2nd inning. Kyle VanKalker led off with a double and two outs later the Trolls had two runs as Chris Riemersma sent one over the fence. Two batters later a double by Tyler Sroczynski drove in the third run.

The Trolls gave up one run in the 3rd inning, but continued to hold the lead until the 5th inning. Harris Stowe put together four doubles to score three runs to take the lead over at 4-3. Trinity failed to score in their next two at bats for the loss.

The day did not get better for the Trolls in the second game of the double-header as they were rocked for a 16-2 loss. The team gave up multiple runs in each of the first three innings to fall behind 12-0. Trinity got on the board on a RBI single by Chris Riemersma in the 5th inning, but by the end of that inning they trailed 16-1. Their only other run came in the 7th inning.

For the game the Trolls gave up 17 hits while recorded only four. Riemersma had two of those hits.

The team plays next on February 28 in a double-header at Huntington University at 4 pm EST.
