Trolls Claim Two Victories in Calumet-St. Joseph Invitational Print E-mail

ImageThe Trolls went 2-1 in their matches at the Calumet-St. Joseph Invitational (Whiting, Indiana) over the weekend. On Friday the team dropped to Aquinas College (MI) in their first match and came back to defeat Calumet-St. Joseph.  Saturday they took Mt. Mercy University (IA) in a four-game match to move their record to 25-6 for the season.

In the first match against Aquinas the team lost the first game, 15-25, came back to take game two at 25-23, and then fall short in the next two games at 20-25 and 20-25. The team posted 43 kills, but Aquinas had 54. Sara Ooms and Hannah Petroelje accounted for 22 of the kills with 11 each. Defensively Amber Slenk had 22 digs and Petroelje had 14. Ooms and Betsy Holman were both involved in four blocks.

The Trolls quickly took care of Calumet-St. Joseph in their next match with scores of 25-12, 25-9, 25-8. Amber Slenk had a number of scoring runs in the match, including an eight point stretch in game two. In the third game Sara Leth served a point run from 13-6 to 21-6. For the match the Trolls had 40 kills and just three hitting errors. Taylor Lee led the team with eight while Karley VanDyke and Kaitlin Feddema had seven each.

The team’s only match on Saturday was against Mt. Mercy. The Trolls opened strong, taking the first two games 25-13 and 25-15. They let the third game get away from them at 17-25 and then they came back from a 17-19 deficit in the fourth game to win at 25-21. The Trolls ended the match with 59 kills with Petroelje posting 15, Ooms claiming 12, and Feddema grabbing 11. Lauren Madden served five of the team’s aces. Slenk and Ellie Raebel did a good job of keeping the ball alive with 19 and 11 digs respectively.

The Trolls will play next on Tuesday, October 26, in a conference match at Cardinal Stritch University at 7 pm.
